New Tappahannock-Essex Airport Opens Fall 2007

Essex County and Tappahannock are planning for the future and building today. Understanding the importance of aviation for business needs and its accompanying recreational possibilities, we have completed the site selection and environmental studies, and site clearance is in progress for a new airport to serve us and the region. The new terminal building includes a passenger lounge, reception counter, offices, security, conference facilities, pilot's lounge and flight plan area, vending area, and restrooms - view a detailed plan of the terminal building. Take a flight around Tappahannock and view the new airport under construction.

The existing facility on Airport Road will become an industrial park with water and sewer availability. Essex county began the land acquisition at Paul's Crossroads for the new airport in 1999 and plans to open the facilities in 2006. The airport will have a 4,300 foot runway, aircraft parking, terminal facilities, fuel, and instrument approach. Three minutes from Tappahannock, just west of the Route 360/17 intersection at Brays Fork, the airport will have direct access to Route 360. Check the map of the area to see where the airport is located.

The design of the airport includes a 4,300 x 75 feet runway with edge lighting, stub taxiways to the apron, a terminal area with terminal buildings and hangars, fuel farm, access roads and parking. Navaids will include AWOS, pilot controlled lighting, rotating beacon, PAPIs, REILs, GPS and localizer.
